About PNG to AVIF conversion

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) was created in 1996 as an open, lossless image format. It preserves every pixel exactly, supports transparency, and is universally supported. PNG is the standard for logos, screenshots, and web graphics — but files are often larger than they need to be.

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) was introduced in 2019 by the Alliance for Open Media. It uses the AV1 video codec to compress images at roughly 50 percent smaller than WEBP and up to 70 percent smaller than JPEG. AVIF is the most efficient modern format for web delivery.

Why Convert PNG to AVIF?

If you're serving PNG images on a website, converting to AVIF can cut file sizes by 50-70 percent without visible quality loss. Smaller files mean faster page loads, better Core Web Vitals scores, and improved SEO rankings. AVIF is supported by all modern browsers.

PNG vs AVIF — The Comparison

PNG is lossless and universal; AVIF is lossy (usually) and modern. PNG is best for editing, archiving, and universal compatibility. AVIF is best for web delivery where file size matters most. Most modern image pipelines use AVIF for serving and keep PNG as the source.

Transparency

Both PNG and AVIF support full alpha transparency. Converting a transparent PNG to AVIF preserves the transparency — this is one of AVIF's key advantages over JPEG.

Browser Support

AVIF is supported by Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16.1+, and Edge 121+. That's over 95 percent of global web traffic. For legacy browsers, keep a PNG fallback using the picture tag.
