About WEBP to PNG conversion

WEBP is a modern image format developed by Google and released in 2010. It was designed to replace both JPEG and PNG on the web — offering lossy compression (like JPEG) for photos and lossless compression (like PNG) for graphics. WEBP typically produces files 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPEG at equivalent visual quality, and it supports both transparency and animation.

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) was created in 1996 as an open alternative to GIF. It uses lossless compression, preserves every pixel exactly, and is universally supported across every operating system, browser, design application, and email client. When you need to edit, archive, print, or share an image without any compatibility risk, PNG is the safe choice.

Why Convert WEBP to PNG?

WEBP is not universally supported in older software. Adobe Photoshop versions before CC 2019 cannot open WEBP. Older versions of Microsoft Office, some email clients, and legacy image editors reject WEBP files. If you downloaded a WEBP from a website and cannot open it in your usual tool, converting to PNG solves the problem instantly.

WEBP vs PNG — The Real Differences

WEBP wins on file size — typically 25-35 percent smaller than PNG for equivalent visual quality. PNG wins on compatibility — every application opens PNG, and PNG is lossless (perfect pixel preservation). WEBP supports both lossy and lossless modes; PNG is always lossless. For web delivery, WEBP is better. For editing, archiving, and universal sharing, PNG is better.

How to Convert WEBP to PNG

Upload your WEBP file using the tool on this page. ConvertFileBox processes it server-side and provides a download link instantly. Batch conversion is supported — upload multiple WEBP files at once (200 MB limit per file) and download all converted PNGs together. No signup, no software installation, no file limits.

Quality Considerations

WEBP is often lossy, so some detail was already discarded when the WEBP was created. Converting to PNG does not restore that lost detail, but it prevents any further degradation. The resulting PNG is pixel-perfect from the WEBP source and safe to edit, re-save, and archive without ever losing quality again.

Files are processed securely on our servers and automatically deleted after 1 hour.

WEBP uses lossy compression; PNG uses lossless. Converting won't restore lost detail, but it prevents further quality degradation during editing and archiving.

Common use cases

  • Editing WEBP images in older versions of Photoshop, GIMP, or Affinity Photo
  • Opening WEBP files on legacy systems that don't support the format
