About HEIF to PNG conversion

HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) is the broader standard published by MPEG in 2015. HEIC is Apple's specific implementation of that standard. Files with the .heif extension are used by non-Apple cameras, some Android apps, and photo-editing tools that follow the ISO/IEC 23008-12 specification. HEIF uses HEVC compression to store photos at roughly half the size of an equivalent JPG.

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) was created in 1996 as a universal lossless image format. Every operating system, browser, design application, and email client opens PNG. PNG preserves every pixel exactly — no compression artifacts are introduced when you re-save or edit.

Why Convert HEIF to PNG?

HEIF has the same compatibility problems as HEIC. Windows 10 and Windows 11 cannot open HEIF without paid HEVC extensions from the Microsoft Store. Most email clients reject HEIF. Adobe Photoshop versions before 23.2 do not open HEIF. Older versions of Figma, Microsoft Office, and most CMS platforms require PNG or JPG input.

Converting HEIF to PNG solves every one of those problems. And because PNG is lossless, you get pixel-perfect preservation — critical when you plan to edit the image in Photoshop, GIMP, or Affinity Photo.

HEIF vs HEIC — Same Format, Different Extension

If your file ends in .heif or .heic, the content is the same. Both are HEVC-compressed images inside the HEIF container. This converter handles either extension.

HEIF vs PNG

HEIF wins on file size — typically 50-70 percent smaller than PNG. PNG wins on compatibility — every tool opens PNG, and PNG is universally lossless. HEIF preserves more editing latitude per byte; PNG preserves every pixel without any compression trade-off. For editing and archiving, PNG is the safer choice. For web delivery, HEIF saves bandwidth.

Quality Considerations

HEIF is often lossy, so some detail was already discarded when the HEIF was created. Converting to PNG does not restore that lost detail, but it prevents any further degradation. The resulting PNG is pixel-for-pixel identical to the HEIF source and safe to edit, re-save, and archive without ever losing quality again.

HEIF uses lossy compression; PNG uses lossless. Converting won't restore lost detail, but it prevents further quality degradation during editing and archiving.

Common use cases

  • Opening HEIF photos on Windows without installing paid HEVC extensions
  • Editing HEIF captures in Photoshop, GIMP, or Affinity Photo
  • Archiving HEIF photos in a universally readable lossless format
  • Uploading HEIF images to websites and forms that only accept PNG
  • Sharing HEIF photos with users who cannot open the format
  • Converting HEIF files from non-Apple cameras into universally compatible PNG
  • Preparing HEIF images for print workflows requiring lossless source files
  • Standardizing .heif and .heic files into a single PNG format
